Travis Goff Doesn’t See Bill Self Leaving College Basketball Anytime Soon

NCAA Basketball: Kansas at Michigan State

After a health scare during the 2022-23 basketball season, many folks are beginning to wonder how long Kansas basketball coach Bill Self can stay on the sidelines.

Despite being just a year removed from a national championship, it’s a fair question, as Self was clearly dealing with a significant issue for him to miss the Big 12 and NCAA basketball tournaments.

In an exclusive interview with Heartland College Sports, Kansas Athletic Director Travis Goff says he doesn’t see Bill Self leaving the game anytime soon.

“I think the really important part of what’s happening here has been the health challenges that Bill [Self] had,” Goff said. “He feels better than he has in a long time. He’s more invigorated than I think he’s been, I don’t know if I can say forever, I haven’t been around him forever, but at the highest level. He’s more committed to KU than I think he’s been, and I think that’s been at a really high level.

“I think he’s more excited and motivated than ever before, and that’s saying a lot about a guy who I think is certainly the best coach in college basketball. He’s really embraced this new era. He’s embraced this idea that he can still bring in young guys and develop and mentor them and maximize their ceiling. But, you can also compliment via the transfer portal. You can provide all the experiences that have long been at the core of Kansas basketball. You can also provide incredible NIL opportunities, because that’s how much this fanbase believes and how much it loves its basketball and this program.

“So he’s thriving in this new environment. I think our future is brighter than ever because I think Bill’s gonna be at the helm for a good chunk of time… I couldn’t feel better about where we’re headed.”

After a few exhibition games, Bill Self and Kansas will start the 2023-24 basketball season in the State Farm Champions Classic (Chicago, IL) on November 14 against Kentucky.
