NCAA football is bringing us unforgettable games every season thanks to highly motivated and skillful players. These youngsters are doing everything in their power to show what they can do and attract the attention of NFL teams.
Many times they provide high-scoring games, which every football fan likes to witness. In this article, we will recap the highest-scoring NCAA football games that you should know about.
Texas A&M (74) vs LSU (72) – November 24, 2018Â
We begin with the spectacular game that took place on Thanksgiving Weekend in 2018. This game broke the record for the highest-scoring FBS game and tied the FBS game for lasting seven overtime. It was one of the most entertaining games to watch as it was 31-31 after four quarters.
Both teams had almost identical chances of winning the game, which you can by the score. However, Texas A&M was slightly better in the end, which got them their first win over the Tigers since 1995.
The Aggies and Tigers found themselves on the field for over 60 minutes in real time after the end of the regulation. In the seventh overtime, LSU managed to score on its possession but failed during the two-point conversion. Then Mond found Davis for a 17-yard touchdown and a win in this 146-point-score game.
SMU (77) vs Houston (63) – November 6, 2022Â
The teams that provided the second-highest NCAA football scores are SMU and Houston. This game finished with 140 points and set the record for the highest-scoring regulation game in FBS’ history.
SMU dominated the game up until the third quarter when Houston decided to go after a comeback. They were pretty good at it, but not enough as SMU played bravely and managed to keep the score difference in their favor.
Both teams had a combined 1,352 offensive yards, 642 for SMU, and 710 for Houston. This shows us how hard Houston was trying to turn things around in this game. If this game didn’t end in regulation, it would have surpassed the previous one that we’ve mentioned.
Western Michigan (71) vs Buffalo (68) – October 17, 2017Â
Next up, we have a 139-point scoring game that took place 5 years ago. At the time, this game score broke the record for the highest-scoring single-game in FBS. Western Michigan and Buffalo battled bravely on the field for nearly five hours.
This game took seven overtime to decide a winner, which reached the already set record. However, it is worth noting that both teams managed to score more points in overtime as opposed to regulation.
Western Michigan scored 40 while Buffalo had only 37 points after the game went to OT. Both of them were tied at 31 in regulation and they were very close on the scoreboard throughout the whole game.
Pitt (76) vs Syracuse (61) – November 26, 2016Â
Many believe that this was one of the most exciting NCAA football games that they’ve seen in their lifetime. With a total point score of 137, it was the highest-scoring game completed in regulation at the time. Between the two ACC foes in the 4th quarters, both teams had a total score of 47 points.
It is fascinating that Pitt and Syracuse did all of that in more than 1,300 yards of total offense. The away team out-possessed the home team with more than 10 minutes.
They also had 18 more first downs and out-gained the Panthers by nearly 200 yards via the air, but still lost the game. Even Pat Narduzzi, Pitt’s coach, wasn’t pleased with how the game played out, despite the unforgettable win.
Boise State (69) vs Nevada (67) – October 14, 2007Â
Lastly, we have the game between Boise State and Nevada, which ended with a total score of 136 points. Fans enjoyed the 1,300 yards of offense where Boise State’s defense stood tall when it mattered the most.
It seemed like the game will continue for a fifth overtime, but the Broncos linebacker Tim Brady had other plans. He sacked Nevada’s quarterback Colin Kaepernick to end the game.
At this stage, it is worth noting that there is another game that ended with a total score of 136 in the NCAA football division. It was a game between Navy and North Texas that took place in the same season. The home team won the game 74-62.
