OU Softball’s Sophia Nugent Transfers to Tennessee

Oklahoma softball will see one of its most promising young players as an opponent when it transitions to the SEC as former catcher Sophia Nugent has announced she will transfer to Tennessee.
As a part of the Sooners’ 2021 recruiting class, Nugent was the No. 3 overall player in the class, according to Extra Innings and Softball America, and the top overall catcher according to Extra Innings.
Nugent made her announcement on Twitter Wednesday afternoon, saying she is, “So excited to be a Lady Vol!!”
The Los Alamitos (CA) product appeared in 50 games for the Sooners in 2023, batting .274 with 19 runs on 17 hits, and 23 RBI.
In her two seasons combined, Nugent had 153 putouts behind the plate, with seven assists and no errors, recording a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
With senior catcher Kinzie Hansen returning in 2024, the Sooners will still have their top option behind the plate, but this loss certainly hits them hard at catcher depth.
Look for the Sooners to find someone with experience behind the plate in the transfer portal this offseason, as well as someone to try and replace All-American Jordy Bahl in the circle.
