Texas Tech’s Joey McGuire Takes You Inside ‘Everything Runs Through Lubbock’

NCAA Football: Texas Tech at North Carolina State

When Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire said “Everything runs through Lubbock” last year, the Red Raiders had just beaten Texas in overtime.

That win made the Red Raiders 3-1 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 play. They finished the season 8-5 with a 5-4 Big 12 record.

That’s not exactly “everything running through Lubbock.” But as far as McGuire’s concerned, that’s OK.

“There’s nothing that comes out of my mouth that I don’t truly 100 percent believe,” McGuire said.

During Big 12 Media Days, he took the media behind the scenes of that post-game scene in Lubbock after the victory.

Turns out, the comment was just supposed to be for the locker room. But, these days, social media, you know?

“Pat Clancy (Texas Tech’s director of creative content and storytelling) is here and he is our storyteller for Texas Tech,” McGuire said. “I told him after that, I said some things are just for the locker room and some things are for everybody. He looked at me and he said, I’m sorry, Coach.”

That meant the video was already out.

McGuire never hid from it. He maintained last week that he meant the words, even if they were meant for the locker room.

Those words could mean something in 2023, as the Red Raiders return nearly every start from last year’s team and to many are a dark horse candidate to reach the Big 12 Championship game at AT&T Stadium.

So, maybe McGuire will be right — this season.

“I think that’s such a powerful word, and whenever you have that in a locker room, you can do some incredible things,” McGuire said.

“So I think our players do believe that,” he continued. “I do think in 2023 there’s an opportunity for some teams to take a huge step in this conference. It’s going to start this year with what we do, but whenever you have an administration and an alumni base that is behind a university like they are at Texas Tech, you do have that opportunity.”
