Mike Gundy Explains Why He Still Isn’t Naming a Starting Quarterback

While many fans have been wondering which quarterback will kick off Oklahoma State‘s season against Central Arkansas in September, Mike Gundy has been noncommittal on the topic by singing praises of each of the quarterbacks on his roster.

With multiple proven quarterbacks on the roster eyeing the starting job in Alan Bowman, Garret Rangel, and Gunnar Gundy, Oklahoma State is faced with the task of deciding which player has the best shot at leading the squad to a Big 12 Championship in December.

Gundy took the podium after Saturday’s practice to mention that each of his quarterbacks has a legitimate chance to earn the starting job.

“Guys are playing good,” Gundy said. “Everybody played good today, right? Right now you couldn’t do it. As soon as we think that it’s beneficial to our team to make that decision, like if you would have watched today, you wouldn’t have been able to do it. And that’s a little bit of what I’m faced with. So we’ll let it run at least another Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. It’s not like any of them aren’t playing good, it’s that they all are playing good.”

Oklahoma State’s quarterback room is currently composed of Michigan transfer Alan Bowman, who many expect to start in Week 1, but Gunnar Gundy and Garret Rangel appear to be making a strong case for the starting job.

Bowman’s best season in college football came in 2018 as a member of the Texas Tech Red Raiders when he threw for 2,638 yards and a touchdown to interception ratio of 17 to seven. The combination of Gundy and Rangel stepped in for the injured Spencer Sanders last year in Stillwater and while Rangel received most of the action in 2022 finishing off with 711 passing yards and a touchdown to interception ratio of four to five, Gundy has reportedly been an impressive surprise this offseason for the Cowboys.

Oklahoma State kicks off their 2023 campaign on September 2nd against Central Arkansas, and while Mike Gundy has yet to name a starter for week one, the three options listed above all have been productive to this point in college football.
