Mike Gundy Says Oklahoma State ‘Will Play Multiple Quarterbacks’ in 2023

After a below-average year at the position in 2023, Oklahoma State is hoping for a bounce-back year at quarterback. Spencer Sanders will not be the starter in Stillwater for the first time since 2018, which means there is some uncertainty under center for the first time in a while.

Former Texas Tech (and Michigan) quarterback Alan Bowman transferred in this offseason and has, by far, the most experience in the room with 26 games worth of experience and 5,329 yards and 34 TDs (18 INTs) to show for it.

However, it sounds like the newcomer hasn’t done enough to be named the starter to this point in fall camp, as Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy said on Thursday that the Cowboys “will play multiple quarterbacks” in 2023.

Bowman shares the room with Garrett Rangel and Gunnar Gundy, as well as true freshman Zane Flores.

Both Rangel and Gundy saw action in 2022 after Sanders went down with injury, but neither showed anything that would suggest they are ready to be the face of the program just yet, which is fine, considering how young they are.

Having the experience that he does, it was almost a foregone conclusion to many that Bowman would trot out with the ones when Central Arkansas comes to town on September 2. Now, folks are giving pause to that way of thinking, making the Pokes’ season opener one that is definitely worth tuning into.
