Week 3 Big 12 Football Players of the Week Announced

NCAA Football: Texas El Paso at Oklahoma

With the Week 3 of the college football season officially in the books, the Big 12 Conference announced four players that would be taking home the third iteration of the Big 12 Football Weekly Awards for the 2023 season.

Oklahoma quarterback Dillon Gabriel won the title of Offensive Player of the Week, while his teammate Nic Anderson took home Newcomer of the Week honors. BYU’s Tyler Batty claimed Defensive Player of the Week honors, and Houston’s Matthew Golden was selected as the Special Teams Player of the Week.

Gabriel took home the title of Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Sooners to a 66-17 blowout win over Tulsa on Saturday after going 28-31 for 421 passing yards with five touchdowns and one interception. Gabriel set a single-game Oklahoma record for completion percentage by going 28 for 31 (.903) in just three quarters of action, according to the official release.

BYU’s junior defensive end Tyler Batty was constantly around the football on Saturday recording a career high of nine tackles against Arkansas. The Utah native also added 1.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks in the Cougars 38-31 win. Batty capped off his day by forcing a fumble late in the fourth quarter as well as recovering another fumble in the final minutes of the game to help BYU seal the deal on the road.

Oklahoma wide receiver Nic Anderson became the first freshman in Oklahoma history to record three receiving touchdowns in a single game, finishing with a career-high three catches for 120 yards. Anderson became the third Sooner in Oklahoma history to score three receiving touchdowns in a game on three catches, joining Curtis Fagan in 2000, and Jack Lockett in 1950, according to the statement from the Big 12.

The final player to be recognized was Houston receiver Matthew Golden who took home Special Teams Player of the Week honors in the Cougars 13-36 loss against TCU. Golden took a kick back 98-yards to the house against TCU for the first kickoff return touchdown of his career. Golden totaled 132 yards on three kick returns, and is also one of the top pass catchers on Holgorsen’s squad finishing his day with four receptions for 56 yards.
