Kirk Herbstreit Touts Dillon Gabriel as His Heisman Favorite

As we hit the halfway point of the 2023 college football season, the Heisman Trophy conversation officially starts to get interesting.

And during College GameDay on Saturday, Kirk Herbstreit said he believes Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Dillon Gabriel should be the frontrunner.

Herbstreit said, “When you’re in a rivalry game and the whole world is watching and you deliver the way Dillion Gabriel did, throwing the football and running the football, you’re at the top. To me, he’s at the top right now.”

Of course Herbstreit was referring to Oklahoma’s thrilling Red River Rivalry win over Texas last week in Dallas. In the game, Gabriel finished 23 of 38 for 285 yards, one touchdown, zero interceptions, plus 14 carries for 113 yards and a score. On the season, Gabriel has thrown for 1,878 yards, completing over 72% of his passes, along with 16 touchdowns to just two interceptions. He’s also rushed for five scores and 208 yards.

Now as for the official Heisman odds, Gabriel is fourth behind Washington’s Michael Penix Jr., USC’s Caleb Williams and Oregon’s Bo Nix.

Here’s a look at the current Heisman odds from BetMGM.
