TCU Men’s Basketball 2023-24 Basketball Schedule Analysis

Desi Sills, Micah Peavy

The 2023-24 TCU Horned Frogs men’s basketball schedule is complete and here is an analysis of the entire schedule as Big 12 basketball season nears.

Season Opener

The Southern Jaguars will visit Fort Worth and Schollmaier Arena to help TCU open the season on Nov. 6. It’s an auspicious start for TCU, as the Horned Frogs won’t leave the friendly confines of their home arena until December.

To Paradise

TCU will wait until the Christmas holiday to get in its tournament, but you can’t do much better than the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii, from Dec. 21-24. If you’re going to work during the break, why not work in paradise? The Horned Frogs will start the tournament with Old Dominion, and then have two more games against opponents to be determined, with the last game being played on Christmas Eve.

Best Non-Con Game

The game against Arizona State on Dec. 16 has a little more intrigue now, as the Sun Devils and the Horned Frogs will be in the same conference starting in 2024-25. That aside, the Sun Devils won 23 games last season and finished in a tie for fifth in the Pac-12 standings. This should be a good game, even though the start time is awful — 10 p.m. central.

Big EAST/Big 12 Battle

TCU will hit the road for what will be its only true road game of non-conference as they face the Georgetown Hoyas. The Hoyas are a program in transition after winning just seven games last season, firing coach Patrick Ewing and luring Ed Cooley away from Providence. It’s Cooley’s job to restore the luster to the Hoyas’ program.

Mid-Major Danger Game

If you’re looking for one it would be Alcorn State on Nov. 21. It’s scheduled at a time when students are getting ready to head out for Thanksgiving holiday and the Braves come into Fort Worth having won 18 games last season.

Big 12 Opener

Obviously, someone in the TCU athletic department lost a bet with someone in the Big 12 office. The Horned Frogs open the season on Jan. 6 at Kansas in a game that will be broadcast on CBS. So much for easing into the league slate.

Big 12 Home Opener

The Horned Frogs start the home portion of their schedule on Jan. 9 when they host the Oklahoma Sooners, which is followed a few days after with a home game against the Houston Cougars.

Brutal Big 12 Stretch

Honestly, the first seven games of the slate isn’t an enviable start to the league slate. After Kansas, Oklahoma and Houston, the Horned Frogs go to Cincinnati, host Iowa State, go to Oklahoma State and then to Baylor. That’s four NCAA Tournament teams and two NIT teams from a season ago.

What Should Happen?

The Horned Frogs are beginning to produce quality, consistent seasons under coach Jamie Dixon. They have been to the NCAA Tournament each of the past two seasons. After a slow start, Dixon is learning quickly how to use the transfer portal to his advantage. The recruiting footprint for the Horned Frogs is getting better and more enticing as the program gathers more steam. They should have the talent to finish in the top half of the league standings going into the Big 12 Tournament.
