Big 12 Basketball

Texas Men’s Basketball 2023-24 Basketball Schedule Analysis

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament Midwest Regional- Miami (FL) vs Texas

The 2023-24 Texas Longhorns men’s basketball schedule is complete and here is an analysis of the entire schedule as Big 12 basketball season nears.

Season Opener

The Incarnate Word Cardinals will make their way up from San Antonio to face the Texas Longhorns in the season opener on Nov. 6. It will be the first of three straight home games for the Longhorns. The Cardinals went 12-19 last season.

The Big Apple Awaits

Texas will play in the Empire Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Nov. 19-20 and there is a chance the Longhorns could play the defending national champions. Texas will face Louisville on Nov. 19 and then play either UConn or Indiana the next day. Any way you look at it, Texas will get a testy game on the second day.

Best Non-Con Game

Texas has a wealth of them, and if they get UConn in the Empire Classic that would be the game many would point to. But, if the Longhorns end up facing Indiana on the second day of that classic, it would end up being a good matchup for Texas. The Hoosiers won 23 games last season.

Big EAST/Big 12 Battle

Good for the Big 12 and the Big EAST to get Texas one final moment with former Texas coach Shaka Smart during the annual cross-conference classic. Texas will head to Marquette on Dec. 6 as the Longhorns will face their former coach for the final time in this format. Maybe they’ll meet in the NCAA Tournament once Texas is in the SEC.

Mid-Major Danger Game

Watch the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi game on Dec. 22. It comes right before the holiday break when players can sometimes get distracted. The Islanders won 24 games last season and won the Southland Conference regular-season title.

Big 12 Opener

Well, this is fun. The Big 12 schedule makers got Texas and Texas Tech together for the opener at the Moody Center in Austin on Jan. 6. Bad blood abounds, even though the coach that caused most of that bad blood is no longer in Austin. If you haven’t heard, he’s at Ole Miss now.

Big 12 Road Opener

Texas will get its first taste of life against one of the four new Big 12 programs when it heads to Cincinnati on Jan. 9. This could be an under-the-radar quality matchup that many might not pay attention to.

Brutal Big 12 Stretch

From Feb. 17 to March 4 Texas will play at Houston, home against Kansas State, at Kansas, at Texas Tech, at home against Oklahoma State and at Baylor. To top it off they end the season against rival Oklahoma. That’s a difficult stretch going into the Big 12 Tournament.

What Should Happen?

This will be coach Rodney Terry’s first full year at the helm. It’s his program now and, frankly, he did a really good job replenishing the roster in Austin. Getting Oral Roberts guard Max Abmas out of the transfer portal was one of the best gets of the offseason for any program. With Dylan Disu back and healthy, along with guard Tyrese Hunter, Texas should push teams at the top of the Big 12 and be a contender in Kansas City.
