HCS Roundtable: Which Week 10 Big 12 Football Game is the Most Important?

NCAA Football: Texas at Kansas State

It seems like only yesterday that the 2023 college football season was still a month away, and here we are heading into Week 10.

The Big 12 race has become a spectacle to behold as there are five teams tied for first place and seven teams that can legitimately make a run to Arlington. In Week 10, the conference’s top eight teams play each other and will give us a true Separation Saturday.

With that being said, which Big 12 football game is the most important in Week 10?

Here’s what the Heartland College Sports staff has to say on the matter.

Week 10 Matchups

23 KANSAS STATE (6-2, 4-1) AT TEXAS (7-1, 4-1)

9 OKLAHOMA (7-1, 4-1) AT 22 OKLAHOMA STATE (6-2, 4-1)

21 KANSAS (6-2, 3-2) AT IOWA STATE (5-3, 4-1)

Biggest Week 10 Game: No. 23 Kansas State at No. 7 Texas

This is the game. It’s the hottest team in the Big 12, and one of the hottest in the country, against the big, bad Texas Longhorns who depart for the SEC after this weekend. Now, don’t get me wrong, Bedlam is huge, but this game has more national appeal and implications too, because UT will be out of the Playoff picture if they lose. You know there are millions of college football fans rooting for just that, if nothing else. Meantime, Kansas State is set up for a huge upset, and would love nothing more than to hand Texas a loss in their final meeting as Big 12 members. The stakes, emotionally and standings-wise, are going to make this can’t-miss Big 12 football at its best.

Biggest Week 10 Game: No. 9 Oklahoma vs. No. 22 Oklahoma State

First of all, it feels surreal that this is the final time that we ever see the Sooners and Cowboys on the same field as members of the same conference. But, could you ask for a better setting for the final Bedlam game? Over the last two weeks, Oklahoma has looked nothing like the team they did in the first six games of the year. The same thing can be said for Oklahoma State over the last four games, as the Pokes have had the nation’s best running game with Ollie Gordon. Both teams enter this game with an identical conference record of 4-1, and the winner of the game will be in the driver’s seat to make the Big 12 title game. Meanwhile, the loser will likely find themselves on the outside looking in, as they won’t have a chance to play any of the teams in the top five in the conference from here on out. This is the biggest game of the year for both teams and building into what is assumed to be a classic back-and-forth game that produces a memorable finish to this historic rivalry.

Biggest Week 10 Game: No. 21 Kansas at Iowa State

I wrote a few weeks ago that I was honestly surprised that Iowa State has coalesced as well as it has this season, given all the tumult of the summer. I also wrote that as long as the Cyclones only have one loss in Big 12 play, they control their own destiny when it comes to the Big 12 race. That’s even more true now that Kansas beat Oklahoma last Saturday. Now, the Cyclones get to host a ranked Jayhawks team that already has two league losses and will be fighting that big win ‘hangover’ that we hear so much about. Iowa State has a legit path to get to Arlington and the Big 12 Championship Game. But it has to keep winning. Kansas doesn’t have as legit a path, but what their win over OU did do was give it a valuable tiebreaker over the Sooners in the event that the top of the Big 12 gets even messier (which is absolutely possible). This game is sneaky important to both teams. Kansas is basically toast with a loss. Iowa State isn’t quite toast, but it’s in a position, like Kansas, where it probably needs quite a bit of help. The Cyclones can avoid that need with a win.

Biggest Week 10 Game: No. 23 Kansas State at No. 7 Texas

Saturday’s matchup between Kansas State and Texas is the biggest game of the Week 10 slate. The Wildcats are heading to Austin in search of their first win over the Longhorns under Chris Klieman while the Longhorns are looking towards the college football playoffs. The winner of this game should become the closest thing to a lock for Arlington that the Big 12 has to offer and the storylines surrounding the matchup are massive. Kansas State has looked like one of the best teams in the country over the past few weeks and is now squaring off with the seventh-best team in the country. This game is worth all the marbles in the Big 12 title race, and while OSU-OU may have the rivalry impact in their matchup, KSU-UT is the end-all-be-all game where the prize fighter of the Big 12 Conference earns its last opportunity to take out the SEC departees, pending a rematch in Arlington.

Biggest Week 10 Game: No. 9 Oklahoma vs. No. 22 Oklahoma State

There are plenty of big-time matchups this weekend. As of now, there is a five-way tie for first place in the Big 12, and four of those teams are playing each other on Saturday. However, one game sticks out to me more than any other matchup. Of course, I am talking about Bedlam. This historic rivalry is one of the most underrated in all of college football and it is a shame that it will not be played every year after this season. These two teams have been playing every year since 1910 and it’s hard to imagine this game not being played next season. The game on Saturday is going to be big for many reasons because this is possibly the last Bedlam game to be played for a while and it will also determine who is a true conference title contender.
