Week 1 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Players of the Week Announced

With Week 1 of the college basketball season officially in the books, the Big 12 Conference announced two players that would be taking home the first iteration of the Big 12 Women’s Basketball Weekly Awards for the 2023-24 season.

TCU’s Madison Conner took home the title for Big 12 Player of the Week while Oklahoma State’s Stailee Heard earned Big 12 Freshman of the Week honors.

 

Conner was incredible in the first week of basketball averaging 23.7 points, nine rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game in her first three games of the 2023-24 season. The Arizona native recorded two double-doubles in three games, which were the first two of her career with a 30-point, 11-rebound game against Oral Roberts, and a 19-point, 11-rebound outing against Rice. Connor also scored 22 points against Texas A&M Kingsville where she finished her day of 5-15 from three earning the first Big 12 Player of the Week Award of the season, according to the official release.

Oklahoma State freshman Stailee Heard had a special start to the 2023-24 season connecting on 71% of her attempts from the floor in three games. Heard led the Cowgirls to a 2-1 record averaging 16,7 points and six rebounds per game in her first three games in college basketball. The Oklahoma native became the first Cowgirl to record a double-double in her debut game since the 1993 season with 18 points and 10 rebounds against SIU-Edwardsville. While the team did wind up on the losing end of a matchup with No. 5 Colorado, Heard finished her day with 17 points from the field against one of the top teams in the country.
