Eight Big 12 Championship Scenarios That Could Play Out in Week 13

Syndication: Austin American-Statesman

Alright, folks, it’s time for the final week of the regular season and as you’ve heard, there are still plenty of scenarios that could play out in the Big 12 title race.

Four games in Week 13 will have a direct impact on the Big 12 Championship:

Here are eight Big 12 Championship scenarios that could play out, leaving the Big 12 tiebreaker procedures to iron out the details. *gulp*

1. CHALK

Big 12 Championship: Texas vs. Oklahoma State

Key Outcomes: OU def. TCU, Texas def. TTU, OSU def. BYU, K-State def. ISU

If chalk holds and the favorites win, it will be Texas vs. Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship. This is the easiest, most straightforward outcome in a weekend that could become a complete mess.

2. Texas Tech def. Texas

Big 12 Championship: Texas vs. Oklahoma State

Key Outcomes: TTU def. UT, OU def. TCU, OSU def. BYU, KSU def. ISU

If Texas loses to Texas Tech on Friday night and the 6-2 teams all win, we have a four-way tie for first place. However, Texas and Oklahoma State would still prevail based on record vs. like opponents + round-robin records.

3. BYU def. Oklahoma State

Big 12 Championship: Texas vs. Oklahoma

Key Outcomes: UT def. TTU, OU def. TCU, BYU def. OSU, KSU def. ISU

If BYU pulls off the upset over Oklahoma State, the Big 12 Championship would be Texas vs. Oklahoma. A tie between Oklahoma and K-State would result in OU moving on with their win over the highest-placed common opponent, Texas.

4. Iowa State def. Kansas State: Texas vs. Oklahoma State

Big 12 Championship: Texas vs. Oklahoma State

Key Outcomes: OU def. TCU, UT def. TTU, OSU def. BYU, ISU def. KSU

A K-State loss to ISU would eliminate the Wildcats from a three-way tie, making OSU’s win over OU an easy head-to-head tiebreaker to send the Pokes to the Big 12 Title Game.

5. Texas Tech def. Texas, TCU def. Oklahoma

Big 12 Championship: Texas vs. Oklahoma State

Key Outcomes: TCU def. OU, TTU def. UT, OSU def. BYU, K-State def. ISU

A Texas loss and Oklahoma loss still send the Longhorns to the Big 12 Championship, while OSU moves on with a head-to-head win over K-State.

6. Texas Tech def. Texas, Iowa State def. Kansas State

Big 12 Championship: Oklahoma vs. Oklahoma State

Key Outcomes: OU def. TCU, TTU def. UT, OSU def. BYU, ISU def. KSU

A Texas loss combined with a K-State loss would be one of the only scenarios that locks Texas out of the Big 12 Championship. With a three-way tie now between OSU, OU, and Texas, the highest-placed common opponent is Iowa State. Despite OSU being the only team with a loss to ISU among that group, it appears the Big 12 would still find a way to give OSU the nod thanks to their win over Oklahoma, while Texas lost to the Sooners. (Yes, I’m just as confused as you are.)

7. TCU def. OU, BYU def. OSU:

Big 12 Championship: Texas vs. Kansas State

Key Outcomes: TCU def. OU, UT def. TTU, BYU def. OSU, KSU def. ISU

With losses from both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, K-State would remain the only team with a 7-2 record, making them the No. 2 seed behind Texas (8-1).

8. COMPLETE AND UTTER CHAOS

Big 12 Championship: Who the hell knows…

Key Outcomes: TTU def. UT, TCU def. OU, ISU def. KSU, BYU def. OSU, WVU def. BU

Bear with me here. If Texas Tech were to take down Texas, plus have all three 6-2 teams drop a game, we would have one hell of an equation to work through. Texas would be the No. 1 seed as the only 7-2 team in the conference. However, there would now be a SIX-WAY tie for second place.

  • Oklahoma (6-3)
  • Kansas State (6-3)
  • Iowa State (6-3)
  • West Virginia (6-3)
  • Oklahoma State (6-3)
  • Texas Tech (6-3)

This tiebreaker would likely come down to opponent’s winning percentage, leaving OU and K-State at the top with their combined opponents being the only ones over .500. Then, with OU’s win over Texas, I believe the Sooners would get the nod over K-State, but I’m not confident enough to put my name next to that, so I’m going to roll with who knows what would happen.
