We’ve reached the final week of the 2023 Big 12 football season, and there’s plenty on the line coming down the stretch.
Despite being this late into the season, not a single team has clinched a spot in the Big 12 title game, and four teams still have a realistic shot, while seven teams are still mathematically in the race.
However, if chalk holds this weekend, it will be Texas vs. Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Championship next Saturday. Is that the matchup we will get, or is something else bound to happen with a big upset or two coming this weekend? The HCS staff weighs in with their thoughts.
The field. I mean, this is the Big 12 after all, right? It can’t be simple and easy. And while it makes sense to think Texas and Oklahoma State win as double-digit favorites and clinch the two spots in the Big 12 Championship Game, I’m not sure that seems very “Big 12”. There’s not a lot of data to point to that suggests the chaos will ensue. But if you’ve been a Big 12 fan long enough, you’ve seen this play out before. What should be simple and straightforward never is, so I’ll take the field.
Call me a chaotician (Dr. Ian Malcolm), but I think the Big 12 season has been way too unpredictable for the final weekend of the season to give us chalk. Whether it is Texas, Oklahoma State, or even both of them, I think that someone goes down this weekend and leaves the backdoor open for another team to sneak into Arlington. Texas plays host to Texas Tech on Friday night, while Oklahoma State will welcome BYU to Stillwater for the first time on Saturday afternoon. Both the Longhorns and Cowboys will be favored by more than two touchdowns, and that’s exactly why I like some real pandemonium to break out this weekend!
Texas vs Oklahoma State
I think this is what most people are expecting to happen, and I would agree. Texas will take care of business against Texas Tech, and I believe Oklahoma State will do the same against BYU. Even if Texas loses there are still plenty of scenarios that keep them in the title game. My concern here is that Oklahoma State will keep playing poorly like they have been the last two weeks. But with so much on the line, the Cowboys should be fired up for this one.
Texas vs. Oklahoma State
I know that Texas Tech will be hyped for its game with Texas, and if that game was in Lubbock I might feel different. But, in Austin, I don’t give Tech much of a chance. The best thing about the Red Raiders right now is the run game, and that’s something Texas is really good at stopping. It may be a sloppy game, but I see Texas prevailing.
As for Oklahoma State, the Cowboys have BYU at home. OSU has lost one game at home. BYU has won one game on the road. Again, if the game were in Provo, I’d be on the fence. But OSU plays well at home and BYU struggles on the road. I don’t see it changing.
So, give me the Longhorns and the Cowboys to meet next Saturday in Arlington.
