With the end of the 2023 college football season nearing, college football fans are beginning to warm up to the next big event on the horizon, the dawn of the transfer portal.
247Sports’ Clint Brewster compiled a list of multiple teams that could experience some transfers at the quarterback position with three Big 12 teams being mentioned.
The first team mentioned on Brewster’s list was the Texas Longhorns who have an interesting quarterback room, to say the least. Brewster mentioned that the 247Sports staff expects Quinn Ewers to return in 2024 as the quarterback class is loaded in 2024 which could cause the Texas quarterback to slip through the cracks. Behind Ewers are Maalik Murphy and Arch Manning who could both see some buzz in the portal if given the right opportunity. Murphy stepped in for the Longhorns while Ewers was out and found big wins against BYU and Kansas State while Manning opted to redshirt.
The second team mentioned is a program in need of a big win. Watching quarterbacks leave in the portal would not fit that description, but nevertheless, Baylor makes an appearance.
Brewster spoke about some likely departures in Waco saying, “It’s been a down year for Baylor, especially at the quarterback position. Starter Blake Shapen has been banged up, and the Bears have also played Mississippi State transfer Sawyer Robertson and junior signal-caller RJ Martinez. Robertson has really struggled and only completed 50% of his throws while at quarterback, and Martinez only 52%. Shapen hasn’t played extremely well, either. It’s safe to say that there will be some serious changes in Waco as coach Dave Aranda tries to correct course. Expect one or more quarterbacks to enter the portal.”
The third and final team mentioned on the list were the TCU Horned Frogs who have seen multiple different quarterbacks under center in 2023. Chandler Morris entered the season as the starter and after an underwhelming start to the season paired with some injury issues, the team turned to true freshman Josh Hoover. The decision for which quarterback to roll with in 2024 could result in one of the names mentioned hitting the portal.
While the transfer portal does provide an ability to bring in talent that wasn’t there in the previous year, Big 12 fans of any team should expect a whirlwind of an offseason ahead.
