Texas Football Played Brett Yormark’s Comments on Loop While Lifting

Brett Yormark

When Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark issued a challenge for Texas Tech head coach Joey McGuire to “take care of business” against Texas over the summer, it appears that the comments from months ago stuck with UT players ahead of Friday’s game.

Usually it’s Texas Tech who is fired up to play Texas, but this time around, it may have been the Longhorns counting down to the match up. The team clearly internalized Yormark’s comments, even going as far as lifting and working out with the comments on an audio loop. Jahdae Barron admitted to that after the game, while QB Quinn Ewers also had some strong comments, which you can watch below.

McGuire could not deliver on Yormark’s challenge as Texas bounced the Red Raiders out of the club to the tune of the second-biggest blowout in series history, a 57-7 beatdown that earned the squad the top seed in the Big 12 Championship Game.

Senior defensive back Jahdae Barron and sophomore quarterback Quinn Ewers both discussed Yormark’s comments following the game with Barron mentioning, “I don’t know if they want me to tell y’all but I’ll tell y’all, He played it while we were lifting. We were hearing it constantly on repeat.”

Ewers followed suit saying, “We were trying to lift and we were like ‘Golly, I mean’ it was just over and over again, ingrained in our minds. That made us dislike it even more.”

While the conversation surrounding the Texas Tech donor luncheon has been well-documented at this point, Ewers reflected on the situation by saying, “It was just crazy for our commissioner to say that about us, but it is what it is and we took care of business.”

After thrashing the Red Raiders to close out the team’s final season of Big 12 football, Texas now has a legitimate shot at claiming its first league title since the 2009 season.
