An ACC Coach Calls Upcoming Transfer Portal Week ‘Maybe the Worst Week in College Football’

NCAA Football: Northwestern at Wisconsin

While college football can be a volatile sport in topics like conference realignment, coaching carousels, and more, the concept of the transfer portal can be a war zone for athletes and coaches alike.

NC State head coach Dave Doeren issued a wild challenge for fans of the Wolf Pack this offseason asking 5,000 fans to donate $1,000 each in order for the team to, “recruit, retain and develop.” He then referred to the portal opening as, “Maybe the worst week in college football.”

While the transfer portal has quickly become one of the fastest ways to revamp an underperforming team in the offseason, the addition of NIL has completely changed the game. Many coaches have criticized the current life cycle of the transfer portal comparing it to NFL free agency.

With the transfer portal becoming an increasingly important part of college athletics, coaches like Deion Sanders are able to make some big splashes by bringing in new players in a short amount of time. The downside to the portal in the eyes of select coaches, is the amount of NIL opportunities needed for schools in the middle of the pack to compete and recruit with bigger brands in an unpredictable landscape.

While it’s tough to say that the portal opening does mark the “worst week of college football” fans should expect to see some big names hit the portal, sooner rather than later.
