Syndication: The Enquirer

The Iowa State Cyclones are headed to the Liberty Bowl later this month to take on the Memphis Tigers, according to the Action Network’s Brett McMurphy.

The game is set for December 29th at 2:30 p.m. central. The game will be at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.

Iowa State is coming off a 7-5 season under Matt Campbell after being picked to finish 10th in the Big 12 Preseason Media Poll. The Cyclones entered the season with uncertainty at multiple positions after losing key players in a gambling investigation, but Campbell found a way to weather the storm and earn bowl eligibility. The Cyclones took down Oklahoma State, TCU, Cincinnati, Baylor, and Kansas State in conference play to earn a matchup against Memphis.

Meantime, Memphis is fresh off of a fourth-place finish in the AAC with an overall record of 9-3. The Tigers recorded wins against Boise State, UAB, North Texas, South Florida, Temple, and Charlotte en route to their date with Iowa State. The trip to the Liberty Bowl is the 10th-straight bowl game appearance for Memphis with the streak dating back to the 2014 season.

Iowa State has played in 17 bowl games and has a 5-12 record in those games. The Cyclones earned their first trip to a bowl game in 2023 after missing out in the previous season. Iowa State found bowl eligibility this season after finishing 2022 off in last place in the Big 12 Conference with an overall record of 4-8.

While bowl games are usually not repeated very often, Memphis and Iowa State played each other in the Liberty Bowl back in 2017 with Iowa State winning 21-20. Matt Campbell’s squad will not get their shot at earning an eighth win in 2023 to add to their resume.
