Steve Sarkisian Provides Positive Injury Update on Xavier Worthy and Ryan Watts
After Texas fans watched wide receiver Xavier Worthy go down with an injury in the Big 12 Championship Game against Oklahoma State, Steve Sarkisian provided a positive update on Sunday afternoon regarding the status of Worthy, as well as DB Ryan Watts who has been inactive since Week 10.
Sarkisian told Kirk Bohls of the Austin-American Statesman that he, “feels very confident” that both Xavier Worthy and Ryan Watts will be available for the Sugar Bowl matchup against Washington.
Despite head coach Steve Sarkisian mentioning that Xavier Worthy’s X-rays came back negative during the halftime break of the Big 12 title game, fans had a rising level of concern after seeing Worthy in a boot and on crutches after the game.
Watts was shaken up on the first play of the game back in Week 10 against Texas Tech, but will likely return in time for the game on January 1st.
Getting both Worthy and Watts back for the matchup against No. 2 Washington would be huge as both players have been important pieces of the Longhorns’ incredible 2023 run. Worthy is the Longhorns’ leading receiver with 67 grabs for 833 yards and five scores in his junior season. The California native checks in as the seventh-ranked wide receiver prospect in the 2024 NFL Draft class should he declare following the conclusion of the season.
While Watts’ numbers may not be as flashy as other members of the Longhorns’ secondary, he has recorded 26 tackles and three pass breakups for Steve Sarkisian’s defense this season through limited snaps.
Worthy and Watts will have a little downtime to rest and recover before the Longhorns head to New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl on January 1st at 7:45 p.m. CT on ESPN.
