West Virginia Football to Play North Carolina in Duke’s Mayo Bowl

NCAA Football: West Virginia at Baylor

The West Virginia Mountaineers are headed to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl later this month to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels, according to the Action Network’s Brett McMurphy.

The game is set for Wednesday, December 27th at 4:30 time p.m. central. The game will be at Bank of America Stadium.

West Virginia is coming off an 8-4 season under Neal Brown after being picked to finish last in the Big 12 Preseason Media Poll. The Mountaineers finished off their 2023 campaign with wins over Texas Tech, TCU, UCF, BYU, Cincinnati, and Baylor en route to bowl eligibility. The Mountaineers’ four losses came against Penn State, Houston, Oklahoma State, and Oklahoma.

Meantime, North Carolina is fresh off of a seventh-place finish in the ACC with an overall record of 8-4. The Tar Heels recorded wins against South Carolina, Appalachian State, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Miami, and Duke en route to their date with West Virginia. The trip to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl marks the fifth straight bowl game for North Carolina dating back to the 2019 season.

West Virginia has played in 39 bowl games and has a 16-23 record in those games. The Mountaineers earned a trip to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in 2023 after failing to reach bowl eligibility in 2022 with an overall record of 5-7.

The two teams have only played each other twice in program history with each team owning a win. North Carolina took down West Virginia 20-13 in 1997 before the Mountaineers got revenge almost a decade later with a 31-30 win over North Carolina in the 2008 Meineke Car Care Bowl.
