Baylor QB Blake Shapen Enters Transfer Portal

NCAA Football: Baylor at Central Florida

After reports came out last week that Blake Shapen might enter the transfer portal, it’s now become official as the Bears’ starting quarterback is officially open to other opportunities as of Monday morning.

Since filling in for an injured Gerry Bohanon in the 2021 season and leading Baylor to a Big 12 Championship, Shapen has been a regular fixture at BU and will take the vast majority of the experience in the Baylor QB room when he leaves.

Shapen is a big name to hit the transfer portal and was one of the lone bright spots during the 2023 season in Waco. Shapen finished his junior season off throwing for 2,188 yards and a touchdown to interception ratio of 13-3, while also adding four scores on the ground.

The Louisianna native totaled 479 completions for 5,574 yards in his time at Baylor and boasted a career touchdown to interception ratio of 36-13. While no one said the transfer portal is easy, the loss of Shapen was somewhat expected as Baylor was listed on 247Sports’ Clint Brewster’s list last week as a team that could face some transfers at the quarterback position.

Baylor will now have a new spot to fill ahead of the 2024 season, but with this offseason shaping up to include one of the busiest portal cycles in college football history, Dave Aranda should have some options available for replacement.
