Big 12 Dominates Debut of NCAA NET Rankings

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament-Rutgers at Houston

A Big 12 men’s basketball team was at the top of the first NCAA NET ratings of the 2023-24 season — just not the one that many expected.

The Houston Cougars, who joined the Big 12 in July, topped the NCAA NET ratings on Monday, which is one of the primary tools the NCAA Tournament committee will use to determine the 68-team field in March.

The Cougars (8-0) have yet to lose a game and have three Quadrant 1 wins. Quadrant 1 wins are wins that are the most important to the selection committee and reflect victories over the Top 75 teams in NET, depending upon the location of the game.

Eight Big 12 teams were ranked in the Top 50 in NET ratings, the most of any conference. The SEC was right behind the Big 12 with seven.

NET ratings are updated every day.

While the Cougars were No. 1, they were also No. 2 — as in the BYU Cougars. BYU (7-0), which also joined the Big 12 in July, was No. 2 in Monday’s ratings, a reflection of its early season success. Unlike Houston, BYU only has one Quadrant 1 win.

One other Big 12 team was in the Top 10 — Baylor (8-0). The Bears also have one Quadrant 1 win so far this season. The Bears are the highest-rated legacy program in the Big 12.

A cluster of four Big 12 programs are among the bottom half of the Top 20, and one is a new program. Iowa State (6-2) is No. 13, Cincinnati (7-0) is No. 14, Kansas (7-0) is No. 16 and Oklahoma (7-0) is No. 19.

Kansas and Iowa State each have a Quadrant 1 loss. But Kansas is also 3-1 against those teams, while Iowa State doesn’t have a Quadrant 1 win yet. Oklahoma is 1-0, while Cincinnati doesn’t have a Quadrant 1 game yet.

The final Big 12 team in the top 50 is TCU (7-0) at No. 41, which needed a last-second shot to beat Georgetown on Saturday and doesn’t have a Quad 1 game yet.

Outside the Top 50 is Texas (6-1) and No. 59, Texas Tech (5-2) at No. 87, Kansas State (6-2) at No. 100, UCF (5-2) at No. 112, Oklahoma State (3-4) at No. 196 and West Virginia (3-4) at No. 209.

Looking ahead to the four new Big 12 programs for 2024-25, Arizona is the highest rated at No. 3. After that, Utah is No. 39, Colorado is No. 54 and Arizona State is No. 99.
