Texas Tech Football Working on Series Swap Among Pac-12 Teams
According to Don Willaims of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt is working on swapping a planned road trip to Oregon in 2024 for a road game at Washington State instead on the same date.
Williams says the agreement would be part of a package of schedule changes including the Ducks, Cougars, and Red Raiders that would extend into the 2030s and begin a series with Washington State.
“We respect the importance of historical rivalries,” Hocutt told the Avalanche-Journal via tech, “which is why we are willing to work with Oregon to preserve their ability to play Oregon State. I would encourage others in the State of Texas to consider the same.”
The latter half of that response was a reference to Hocutt’s desire to keep its series with the Texas Longhorns, who are set to join the SEC in July of 2024.
Pac-12 journalist John Canzano corroborated this proposed schedule change, reporting that Oregon and Oregon State are set to face each other on September 14 next season, keeping a series that started back in 1894 alive despite conference realignment’s best attempt to end the tradition.
With that, Texas Tech would play Washington State instead of Oregon on September 7, one week prior to the Civil War matchup.
“[We’re] working towards that, but not final yet,” Hocutt told the Avalanche-Journal after the Canzano report.
If everything works out, Texas Tech and Wazzu would begin a home-and-home series, with the Cougars traveling back to Lubbock in 2032 to complete the series.
