West Virginia DB Beanie Bishop Jr. Accepts Invite to East-West Shrine Bowl

NCAA Football: Kansas State at West Virginia

One of the best defenders in the Big 12 has accepted an invite to a pre-draft bowl as West Virginia defensive back Beanie Bishop Jr. will play in the 2024 annual East-West Shrine Bowl.

Bishop was one of the biggest reasons for the Mountaineers’ defensive resurgence in 2023 as he led the country with 20 pass breakups through 12 games, and also led West Virginia with four interceptions.

West Virginia was picked to finish dead last in the Big 12 back in July by conference media, giving head coach Neal Brown plenty of ammunition to motivate his group. It certainly worked, as West Virginia scratched and clawed its way to an 8-4 record despite a tough schedule, and should’ve been 9-3 if not for a Hail Mary loss to Houston in Week 7.

Bishop’s huge year for the Mountaineers didn’t just help his team win more games, it also saw accolades of all kinds pile up for the redshirt senior out of Louisville (Kent.).

He was named First-Team All-Big 12 cornerback by both conference media and the Associated Press, and was also named a consensus All-American, becoming just the 13th player in West Virginia program history to earn that distinction.

Now, Bishop and the Mountaineers will hope to finish their season on a high note and get to 9-4 on the year. Then, Bishop will represent the Mountaineers one last time at the East-West Shrine Bowl on February 1, 2024.

The Duke’s Mayo Bowl will kicks off on Wednesday, Dec. 27, from Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina between WVU and North Carolina at 5:30 p.m. EST.
