Spencer Sanders’ Ole Miss Career Ends in Disappointing Fashion

Spencer Sanders - oklahoma state qb

Spencer Sanders’ last postseason appearance came in the 2022 Playstation Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame. A 37-35 victory over the Fighting Irish capped Oklahoma State’s 2021 season with a 12-2 record, and it also provided the best game of Sanders’ collegiate career.

On that day, the former Cowboys’ quarterback threw for 371 yards and four touchdowns, adding 17 carries for a game-high 125 yards as the Denton (Tex.) native led the Pokes to a New Year’s Six victory.

As it turns out, that would be the final time that Sanders would appear in a postseason bowl game. He’d entered the transfer portal prior to the 2022 Guaranteed Rate Bowl, and now he’s been deemed ineligible to play in Ole Miss’s Peach Bowl matchup against Penn State.

According to 247Sports, Sanders has been ruled academically ineligible to participate in the Rebels’ postseason game, meaning he’s played his final down of college football. In his lone season in Oxford, Sanders attempted just 29 passes, completing 19 of them for 278 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions, adding 45 yards on 11 carries.

Sanders did not start a game for Ole Miss during his time with the Rebels, furthering the mystery of why he chose to leave Stillwater after a four-year stint with the Cowboys. Dating back to 2019, Sanders’ collegiate career will end with him throwing for 9,831 yards and 70 touchdowns, adding 2,001 yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground.

It’s expected that Sanders will try his luck in the 2024 NFL Draft, but will have an uphill battle to be selected in what appears to be a deep class of talented quarterbacks.
