Former Texas QB Maalik Murphy Transferring to Duke: Report

Former Texas quarterback Maalik Murphy has committed to transfer to Duke, according to ESPN.

Murphy has been one of the top transfer portal targets this offseason and joins new head coach Manny Diaz and the Blue Devils.

Murphy won both of the games he started for Texas this season as a redshirt freshman, beating both BYU and Kansas State. Murphy threw for 477 yards and three touchdowns, as he was the back up to Quinn Ewers, who dealt with an injury in the middle of the season.

Murphy is a 6-foot-5, 238-pound redshirt freshman and he will be immediately eligible and have three seasons of eligibility remaining. He replaces Duke’s quarterback Riley Leonard, who decided to transfer to Notre Dame following the departure of head coach Mike Elko to Texas A&M.

Murphy looked like he was destined to remain a back up quarterback for Texas since Quinn Ewers still hasn’t decided his plans beyond the 2023 season, with increasing speculation he will not enter the NFL Draft. Meantime, Arch Manning is still waiting in the wings for the Longhorns as one of the top high school football prospects ever.

Coming out of high school, Murphy was a four-star prospect, listed as a Top 200 player nationally and a Top 15 quarterback, according to the 247sports composite rankings.
