While the story of Florida State being left out of the College Football Playoff has been well-documented at this point, a new wrinkle from FSU’s administration added some extra spice to the story.

According to a report from 247Sports’ Brandon Marcello, FSU’s administration has thought over the idea of claiming a National Championship title in the event the team defeats Georgia in the Orange Bowl.

While the proposal of claiming a National Championship title may sound like a strange choice for a team outside of the CFP, the Seminoles wouldn’t be the first team to claim the title.

In 2017, the UCF Knights claimed a National Championship despite being left out of the College Football Playoff. UCF finished first in the Colley Matrix poll and was officially recognized by the NCAA as Final National Poll Leaders in the official record book.

UCF finished off their season with a perfect, undefeated record and even defeated the Auburn Tigers during the season who was the only team to take down the eventual National Champion Alabama Crimson Tide.

Former SEC commissioner Roy Kramer spoke on the possibility of FSU claiming the title saying, “They may, but that’s not a bad thing. Two hundred guys get a National Championship ring instead of 100. You could have that. The one thing I would try to explain to the committee early on would be you got to understand your job is to pick the four best teams in the country, not the four best-undefeated teams. They do not necessarily have to be undefeated. We’re going to try to pick the four best teams.”

While the team still has the tough task of taking down Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs in the Peach Bowl, if the Seminoles can finish off with a perfect 14-0 record, UCF may just have another friend to sympathize with over the CFP Committee’s consistent failures.
