Urban Meyer: Texas Has Best Roster in CFB ‘And It’s Really Not Even That Close’
After more than a decade away from national title contention, the Texas Longhorns have made their much-anticipated return to the college football spotlight as they’ll face second-ranked Washington in the Allstate Sugar Bowl on Monday night.
Texas will be a slight favorite heading into the contest and would put themselves into one of two spots in the national championship game with a victory.
Opinions on the Longhorns have been widespread over the years, but with Sarkisian putting together an elite offensive depth chart and one of the best defensive lines in the nation, it appears that Texas’ issues are a thing of the past.
Talent at the skill positions has never been an issue in Austin, and the talent along the lines of scrimmage has become one of the best collections of any program. However, if you ask Urban Meyer about the Longhorns’ roster, it’s not just elite, it’s the best in the country by a wide margin.
In a recent appearance on The Herd With Colin Cowherd, Meyer discussed his thoughts on the matchup between Washington and Texas, noting just how good he believes the Longhorns’ roster is at this point.
“I went to Austin, Texas, and Sark was good enough to invite our staff over to watch practice and that looked like our Florida Gator team in 2008,” Meyer said of the 2023 Texas Longhorns. “They’re gigantic. They’re the best-looking defensive line I’ve seen in a decade. I mean, they’re big, they’re fast, they’re athletic. They’re really well-coached. They’ve got skill everywhere. Every player on offense is a five-star, like you said, it’s as good a team as money can buy.
“I think they’re the best roster and it’s really not even that close. I think they’re the best roster in college football. That’s why I’m gonna go with Texas.”
Texas will have a chance to prove Coach Meyer right on Monday night, with the Sugar Bowl scheduled for a 7:45 p.m. CT kick on ESPN.
