Colin Cowherd on Steve Sarkisian: ‘He Can Handle Texas’
While Texas Head Coach Steve Sarkisian solidified himself as one of the best coaches in the Big 12 Conference after leading the Longhorns to the College Football Playoff, FOXSports’ Colin Cowherd voiced his opinions on what makes Sark great.
Cowherd mentioned that the Longhorns HC shares a lot of similarities to another Longhorn great by saying, “Steve Sarkisian has a Mack Brown feel. He can handle Texas. He’s not engulfed by it.”
Cowherd continued by saying, “I’ve seen Texas coaches my entire life just get engulfed by the program, the donors, the money, the spectacle, the pressure. Mack Brown never did, and Sark doesn’t. He loses games, he never loses the locker room.”
While Sarkisian’s squad was taken down in the Sugar Bowl by Kalen DeBoer and the Washington Huskies, his unit showed a lot of resolve fighting back from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter which came down to one final play at the end of regulation.
“Everybody that’s faced Kalen DeBoer in the last two years, he makes everybody look like a bad coach,” Cowherd said. “Dan Lanning at Oregon is a spectacularly capable young coach, he’s 0-3 against Kalen DeBoer. That’s why Saban got so many coaches fired in his prime in the SEC, and why Harbaugh’s got Ryan Day, who beats everybody but Georgia and Michigan, he’s got Ryan Day feeling heat. Great coaches make other really good coaches, and Sark’s a really good coach, they make them look loose.”
Cowherd finished off his statement by mentioning how hard it is to win a national title saying, “Harbaugh’s special teams were inept, Bama’s offensive line and quarterback play were inept, and Washington almost handed Texas a win and they’re brilliantly coached. This stuff’s not easy. Sark feels big enough for Texas.”
While the Longhorns fell short of a National Championship in their final season as members of the Big 12, thanks to the overhaul from Steve Sarkisian and his coaching staff, Texas should find success in the SEC.
