Kansas Loses More Offensive Line Depth With Spencer Lovell Transfer
Kansas’ offensive line is set to lose several pieces of its offensive line after a 9-4 campaign in 2023, and has yet another addition to the list on Tuesday as senior Spencer Lovell will leave the team as a graduate transfer ahead of the 2024 season.
While Lovell didn’t play many snaps for the Jayhawks in 2023 (24 offensive snaps, per PFF), his loss further complicates what’s become a major issue to address heading into the offseason. KU is set to lose starters Mike Novitsky and Dominick Puni to eligibility, plus Ar’maj Reed-Adams announced his intentions to enter the transfer portal on Monday.
At 6-foot-6, 325 pounds, Lovell would’ve at least figured into the rotation for the Jayhawks’ offensive line in 2024, as he brought experience from both Arizona State and Cal to Lawrence when he arrived, but now he’ll spend his seventh and final year of eligibility elsewhere.
Offensive line depth had become a strength of Kansas under head coach Lance Leipold, and now that will be put to the test as KU will need to replace several missing pieces from this year’s team.
Offensive line coach Scott Fuchs has been vocal about how pleased he is with the versatility among his group of young players along the front, and unless KU can address every need it has upfront in the transfer portal, which is unlikely, that versatility will be necessary heading into a new season.
With Jalon Daniels and Devin Neal both set to return next season, there’s plenty of skill talent to work with in the backfield, but protecting them will be the biggest key for Kansas heading into 2024.
