EA Sports Drops the Ball on College Football Video Game Update
The college football world was held captive on Monday night as Michigan and Washington squared off in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game.
Fans from across the nation tuned in to see the Wolverines and Huskies duke it out for the right to be crowned champion, but a lot of them were tuned in for another reason as well (myself included).
Last week, reports surfaced that EA Sports was set to provide an important update for their much-anticipated release of EA Sports College Football, the relaunch of its former college football video game.
Folks gathered around their televisions to watch the game and also the commercials, in hopes of catching a glimpse of what the game might look like when it’s released this summer. However, as has often been the case lately with EA, fans were left with nothing but disappointment and confusion, as nothing ever happened. Not a single commercial or mention of the game occurred at any point in the evening.
To say that fans were disappointed might actually be an understatement.
Extra Points’ Matt Brown, who has been as tied in as anyone when it comes to the latest information on the upcoming game, says that fans’ expectations might’ve gotten a bit out of hand though.
In a story on Tuesday morning, Brown reiterated that he wasn’t able to corroborate the 247Sports report and that he’d warned fans to keep their expectations low. With the game set to make its return after over a decade-long hiatus, that probably wasn’t feasible given the report came from such a reputable source.
As Brown states, EA Sports never officially said it was going to release anything. However, there wasn’t even a tweet. No likes. No replies. No announcement that a preview wasn’t coming. Nothing. Now, what was disappointing for fans of the game also feels like a huge wasted opportunity to create a legitimate wave of hype for their new flagship product.
It’s just the latest in a long string of disappointments that EA has been at the center of, although folks are as hopeful as ever that this new game will change that narrative.
When will we see something about one of the most anticipated video games in recent memory? Who knows. At this point, it could be when it actually comes out in July. Until then, we wait with bated breath.
