Four Current, Future Big 12 Programs Among Exclusive Athletics Group
The Big 12 football season has come to a close, while the basketball season in just now getting into the thick of things in the second week of January.
The conference performed well in the bowl season, with its 2024 members going 6-3, and as always, there’s not a better league in the country when it comes to hoops.
In fact, some of the best athletics programs in the country are found right here in the Big 12, regardless of what some folks might want you to believe.
Football and men’s basketball are by far the most popular sports in college athletics and schools’ success in those sports will paint the perception for each respective program, whether fair or not.
RedditCFB pointed out on Tuesday that there are just six schools in the country who are having elite success in both avenues right now, and four of them are either current or future Big 12 schools.
Texas, Arizona, Oklahoma, and Kansas are all ranked in the Final AP Poll, as well as the current AP Men’s basketball Top 25.
Texas football finished the season ranked No. 3 nationally while the basketball team is currently ranked No. 25. Arizona finished as the No. 10 team in football this season, while the Wildcats’ basketball team is currently the No. 8 team in the country. Oklahoma finished the year at No. 15 in football and its basketball team has surprised a lot of folks, coming in at No. 9 right now. Kansas football is coming off its best season since 2007 and finished the year ranked 23rd. Meanwhile, the basketball team sits at No. 3 with both teams ranked ahead of them losing on Tuesday.
While Oklahoma and Texas are leaving for the SEC, the pair of remaining Big 12 programs are expected to be staples of the league in both football and basketball for next year and beyond.
