Oklahoma Lands Former Texas, Nebraska QB Casey Thompson
After spending time with two of Oklahoma’s historic rivals, Casey Thompson, a former four-star quarterback out of Newcastle (Okla.), is coming back home.
Thompson, a member of Texas’ 2018 recruiting class, has five years of college experience including a three-year stint with the Longhorns as well as a season with Nebraska and FAU. He will have one year of eligibility remaining thanks to a medical waiver after suffering a season-ending injury against Clemson back in September.
The 2024 season would serve as Thompson’s seventh year in college football, but his addition to the Oklahoma roster, which already has the starting quarterback spot filled by five-star freshman Jackson Arnold, shows that he’s looking to contribute in other ways besides trying to take a starting gig.
Having an experienced backup quarterback is a rarity in college football nowadays, as the transfer portal makes it almost too easy for quarterbacks to pick up and take their talents somewhere else if they have competition. After that being the case for Thompson over the course of his career, it now appears he’s willing to offer his experience and cerebral talent to the Sooners in 2024.
With 62 career touchdowns and 5,338 passing yards to his name, Thompson provides a veteran presence in a quarterback room that is rife with talent but void of experience. The only start in the room belongs to Jackson Arnold, who started the Alamo Bowl against Arizona and committed four turnovers in a 38-24 loss.
Thompson’s presence will not only give Oklahoma a backup plan if Arnold were to go down with an injury, but it also gives the Sooners someone to mentor their young star. Having been around three different programs and had nearly 650 passing attempts at the college level will be a good voice to have in the quarterback room.
