Baker Mayfield has had an up-and-down career after being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, and that has been a point of contention for college football and NFL fans alike.

Mayfield was drafted by the Browns organization, which has had some of the worst quarterback luck that the league has ever seen. In four seasons with Cleveland, Mayfield completed 61.9% of his attempts for 14,125 yards and 92 touchdowns with 56 interceptions and led the Browns to their first playoff win in 30 seasons.

In 2022, the Browns decided to bring in Deshaun Watson and let Mayfield walk, which seemed that it might end his time as a starting quarterback in the NFL. The former Sooners spent time with two teams that season, starting six games for the Carolina Panthers and four games for the Los Angeles Rams, going 2-8 in 10 starts with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

Just when it seemed that Mayfield might be on the decline, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers took a chance on the 28-year-old and it’s paid off in a major way. In a season of resurgence, Mayfield has seemed to recapture his magic with a career-best 4,044 yards and 28 touchdowns with just 10 interceptions.

After leading them to an NFC South title and a 9-8 overall record, Mayfield then led the Bucs to a 32-9 win over Philadelphia on Wild Card Weekend, sending them to the Divisional Round where they’ll now face the Detroit Lions at Ford Field.

Mayfield completed 61.1% of his passes for 377 yards and three touchdowns with zero interceptions in the victory.

After such a big season, there’s a very good chance that Mayfield is the quarterback of the future in Tampa, and at 28, he could be set up there for quite some time.

What is certain, is that when Mayfield is playing well people tune in for all the action. After Monday night’s win, Mayfield is trending on Twitter.

Mayfield and the Bucs will take on Detroit on Sunday, Jan. 21 with kickoff scheduled for 2:00 p.m. CT on CBS.
