Houston Hires Former Mississippi State OC Kevin Barbay

NCAA Football: Houston at Texas Tech

Houston head coach Willie Fritz has been assembling his staff since being hired by the Cougars last month and has now decided on who will call plays in the 2024 season.

Fritz and the Cougars have been rumored to be connected to Barbay for some time now, but made it official on Tuesday, pending approval of the UH Board of Regents.

Barbay spent the 2023 season with Mississippi State and served as the Bulldogs offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Under Barbay, the Bulldogs rushed for 1,761 yards – the program’s most in four seasons. Mississippi State also produced 61 plays of 20 or more yards and also helped develop SEC All-Freshman quarterback Chris Parson.

Barbay has jumped around in his last five seasons, spending time at Mississippi State (2023), Appalachian State (2022), and Central Michigan (2019-21), and served several different roles during that time. He was an assistant head coach/wide receivers coach(2019-20) and offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach (2021-23), helping his offenses produce 31 games with 30+ points and 19 games with 500+ yards.
