Rodney Terry Apologizes For His Handling of ‘Horns Down’ Situation vs. UCF
Texas head coach Rodney Terry set the internet on fire after calling out the UCF Knights basketball team for their use of the “Horns Down” hand signal after taking down the Longhorns in Austin earlier in the week.
Following millions of reactions on social media to Terry’s comments, the Longhorns head coach decided to apologize for his actions following Texas’ 75-73 win over No. 9 Baylor.
Terry initially called out the UCF basketball team claiming that the use of the Horns down signal was classless. He went on to explain that he expects opponents to handle themselves with dignity regardless of which team walks away with a victory.
Terry started by saying, “I had no intention of trying to show up to anyone or offend anyone in terms of what occurred at the end of that game. Johnny Dawkins is a good friend of mine and he’s a really good coach. He has a really good program, and they’re having a really good year. Personally, if I offended him or his program or anyone for that matter, that was not my intention.”
The Knights went on to rally back 13 points in the second half against Texas to steal a 77-71 win on the road, deep in the heart of Texas.
“Again, if I offended some of our fans as well in not handling myself the right way in terms of going about it the right way, I apologize to our fanbase as well,” Terry said. “I understand what it means to be the head coach at the University of Texas, what our brand stands for, and I respect every opponent that we play.”
While Terry may have taken it upon himself to apologize for some senseless actions, I think it’s a safe bet to assume this will not be the last time Terry has to witness fans, coaches, or players throwing up the “Horns down” after a big win.
