While Kansas Head Coach Lance Leipold elected to remain in Lawrence after being linked to the Washington job, the same cannot be said for some of his assistant coaches.

According to a report from FootballScoop.com, Mike Elko and Texas A&M are adding former Kansas co-defensive coordinator Jordan Peterson to their staff.

While nothing official has been announced yet, sources tell FootballScoop that Peterson was a top target to join Mike Elko’s staff as a senior defensive assistant, and the deal is expected to be done before the day’s end.

The loss of Peterson would be massive for Jayhawks as Peterson has helped to shape one of the Big 12’s best secondary’s and is responsible for helping produce four All-Big 12 selections during his time at Kansas.

Peterson has spent four seasons under Lance Leipold working as the team’s defensive backs coach and was elevated to the role of co-defensive coordinator ahead of the 2023 season.

Peterson’s unit was one of the best groups in the Big 12 this season and finished among the league’s best in multiple statistical categories. The Jayhawks surrendered 377.6 total yards per game (fourth), 210.5 passing yards per game (second), 167.1 rushing yards per game (seventh), and 25.8 points per game (sixth).

While Lance Leipold has done virtually everything right since taking over for the Jayhawks in 2021, the 2024 season appears to be one of his biggest tasks to date after losing both his offensive coordinator and his co-defensive coordinator to other programs.
