Cincinnati Hiring Iowa State LB Coach Tyson Veidt as Defensive Coordinator
Scott Satterfield and the Cincinnati Bearcats are coming off a disappointing 3-9 campaign in 2023, which also included a 1-8 record in conference play.
Inconsistent play at quarterback and in the secondary proved to be their downfall in many contests, while the running game and run defense were among the best in the Big 12. Overall the Bearcats’ D simply wasn’t good enough to win games in 2023 though, giving up a league-worst 6.7 yards per play.
The Bearcats have made a move to shore up things on the defensive side of the ball though, and opted to stay in the conference when it came to hiring a new play caller for that side of the ball.
According to a report from 247Sports Matt Zenitz, Cincinnati is set to hire Iowa State associate head coach and linebackers coach Tyson Veidt as its new defensive coordinator.
Veidt followed Matt Campbell to Iowa State in 2016 and has been an integral part of building the Cyclones’ defense into the stalwart it is under Jon Heacock.
Viewed by many as the birthplace of the revolutionized 3-3-5 scheme that has swept the game of football, Iowa State has ranked at or near the top of the Big 12 in total and scoring defense for the last several seasons.
In the eight years that Veidt spent time under Campbell in Ames, the Cyclones led the Big 12 in total defense, scoring defense, and rushing defense, including a conference-best 5.2 yards per play in 2023.
Veidt, an Ohio native, will now head back to his home state and try to get the Bearcats’ defense on the right track. There’s a proven track record of success there, and if he can get them right on that side of the ball, UC will be much closer to contention in the Big 12 going forward.
