Kansas Guard Johnny Furphy Joins Ochai Agbaji, Andrew Wiggins on Exclusive List
Kansas guard Johnny Furphy put up an incredible stat line on Monday against Cincinnati recording 23 points, 11 rebounds, and two steals en route to a 74-69 win over the Bearcats.
With his impressive numbers, Furphy became one of six true freshmen in the last 15 years to record a 20-point double-double for Bill Self at Kansas.
Furphy added his name to a list featuring some all-time Kansas greats including the likes of Andrew Wiggins, Kelly Oubre, Josh Jackson, Ochai Agbaji, and Devon Dotson who all recorded 20-point double-doubles during their freshman season.
Furphy’s big night brought his season totals up to 7.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game while shooting 51.1% from the field, 39.7% from three, and 70.8% from the free throw line.
Coming out of Centre of Excellence High School in Melbourne Australia, Furphy was listed as a four-star prospect by the 247Sports index as well as the nation’s 35th-ranked prospect. He also checked in as the 14th-ranked small forward in his class and the top-ranked player from Victoria.
While the Jayhawks appear to still have some issues in rotations with depth and bench points, the addition of Johnny Furphy to the starting lineup has provided Bill Self’s squad with the spark it needed to contend for a title in the best basketball conference in America.
Furphy and the Jayhawks take the court next on Saturday, January 27th against the No. 23 Iowa State Cyclones in Ames.
