Big 12 Quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Brock Purdy to Meet in Super Bowl
It’s an All-Big 12 quarterback Super Bowl LVIII this year in Las Vegas. Patrick Mahomes, who played his college football at Texas Tech, and now quarterbacks the Kansas City Chiefs, will go up against Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers, who played his college football at Iowa State.
The Kansas City Chiefs are playing in their fourth Super Bowl in five season after beating the Baltimore Ravens on the road 17-10 on Sunday in the AFC Championship Game. Meantime, Purdy led the 49ers from down 24-7 to a 34-24 win at home over the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game.
Mahomes and Purdy have had very different paths to reach this point. Mahomes left Texas Tech as a prolific scorer and ended up being drafted in the Top 10 of the 2017 NFL Draft. Purdy had a productive career at Iowa State, but went overlooked in the 2022 NFL Draft and was selected with the last pick of the entire draft (No. 262), a selection that is labeled, “Mr. Irrelevant”.
But when looking back on their college careers, Purdy led Iowa State to a 30-17 record as the starter, including playing in the 2020 Big 12 Championship Game, which the Cyclones lost to the Oklahoma Sooners. Patrick Mahomes went 13-15 as a starter for the Red Raiders, with his best season coming in 2015, when the team went 7-5 in the regular season before losing LSU in the Texas Bowl.
The two quarterbacks never overlapped during their time at their respective schools. Mahomes finished 1-1 against Iowa State, while Purdy went 3-1 against Texas Tech.
This is the second-straight year the Super Bowl has featured two former Big 12 quarterbacks, as Super Bowl LVII saw Mahomes meet former Oklahoma and current Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts.
Super Bowl LVIII kicks off on Sunday, Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, around 6:30 p.m. Eastern (5:30 p.m. Central Time, 4:30 p.m. Mountain Time and 3:30 p.m. Pacific Time).
