Kansas to Hire Former Philadelphia Eagles DB Coach D.K. McDonald as Co-Defensive Coordinator

While Lance Leipold and the Kansas Jayhawks have lost some key members of the Jayhawks coaching staff following a successful 2023 campaign, Kansas has reportedly closed in on their next co-defensive coordinator.

According to a Friday report from TheAthletic‘s Bruce Feldman, Kansas is expected to hire former Philadelphia Eagles defensive backs coach D.K. McDonald as one of the team’s new defensive coordinators in Lawrence.

 

McDonald, a 21-year coaching veteran, spent the previous three seasons on Nick Sirianni’s staff in Philadelphia. McDonald rose through the coaching ranks with the Eagles after starting out as the team’s assistant defensive backs coach in 2021.

During the Eagles’ historic 2022 Super Bowl run, McDonald helped to contribute to a unit that gave up the second-fewest total yards of offense per game (301.5), the least passing yards per game (179.8), third-lowest opponent passer rating (81.6), fourth-most interceptions (17), and fifth in total pass breakups (81). McDonald helped develop the only cornerback duo in the NFL that recorded at least 14 pass breakups and three interceptions as well as helping three different members of the Eagles secondary reach the Pro Bowl (James Bradberry, Darius Slay, C.J. Gardner-Johnson.

Prior to his time in Philadelphia, McDonald spent five seasons at Iowa State operating as the team’s passing game coordinator as well as working with the defensive backs. in 2020, McDonald helped contribute to three safety earning All-Big 12 honors in Greg Eisworth, Lawrence White, and Isheem Young.

While the college football season is still the better part of seven months away, Kansas kicks off its 2024 campaign against the Lindenwood Lions on Thursday, August 29th.
