West Virginia F Akok Akok Dealing with Medical Issue

While the West Virginia Mountaineers were defeated 86-73 on Saturday by 22nd-ranked BYU, the team took the court without the help of one of their key pieces.

Senior forward Akok Akok was absent from the lineup on Saturday which prompted head coach Josh Eilert to mention that Akok is dealing with a medical issue and was sidelined for the contest.

“There was a medical issue and they were uncomfortable with him going this time,” Eilert said. “I can’t get into specifics but it had nothing to do with him personally or my decision whatsoever. Just something where we had to move on.”

While the loss of Akok Akok was yet another difficult setback for Eilert in his first year at the helm, the Mountaineers head coach mentioned that he doesn’t expect the senior to miss any more games this season in relation to the issue.

Through 14 games this season, Akok is averaging 4.4 points and 3.2 rebounds in 16.8 minutes per game. The New Hampshire native joined the Mountaineers in the transfer portal this offseason after spending three seasons with UConn and one year at Georgetown.

West Virginia will hope to see Akok return to the lineup on Saturday, February 10th at 2:00 PM CT on the road in Austin to take on the Texas Longhorns.
