While Kansas State quarterback Will Howard elected to enter the transfer portal to pursue different options, Chris Klieman’s squad turned to Avery Johnson for the future of the team.

After multiple impressive flashes including a five-touchdown performance against Texas Tech, Johnson has quickly become one of the hottest names at the quarterback position in all of college football.

The latest sports personality to spread some excitement about Johnson’s future with the Wildcats was none other than the Late Kick’s Josh Pate who spoke on Johnson in high regard.

“How could you not be excited for our guy Avery Johnson?” Pate said. “He’s the reason Ohio State has a new quarterback. Will Howard looked, saw him, and said, ‘I’m out.’ Big spark last year, remember that Texas Tech game where he had like 19 touchdowns? He’s an excellent athlete and has a full year to develop knowing he’s the No. 1 in that system of Chris Klieman and the guys up there at Kansas State.”

Johnson played in limited drives with Kansas State in 2023 but still managed some impressive numbers when filling in for Will Howard. Johnson recorded 37 completions for 479 yards and five touchdowns in 2023 through the air, all while surrendering zero turnovers. As an explosive dual-threat athlete, Johnson also put up 52 carries for 296 yards and seven rushing touchdowns.

Pate finished his thoughts by saying, “I am very much looking forward to it. He can run the ball, but I’m looking forward to what they can make him into as a passer. Kansas State could be a very, very fun team to watch because of him this upcoming year.”

While Johnson and the Wildcats still have a lot of time left before taking the field for the first time in 2024, K-State will kick off their season on Saturday, August 31st against the UT Martin Skyhawks in Manhattan.
