The state of Oklahoma is mourning on Tuesday as many woke up to the news that country music star Toby Keith has passed away at the age of 62 following a lengthy fight with stomach cancer.

A spectator at nearly every home sporting event for Oklahoma, and nearly every Sooner football game, Keith was one of the most easily recognizable fans on the sidelines and will be missed early and often by the folks in Norman.

OU Athletics considered Toby Keith a “dear friend” and shared a heartfelt message to the world on Tuesday after learning that he’d passed away.

“The OU Athletics family is incredibly saddened by the passing of our dear friend Toby Keith.,” the Sooners’ post reads. “It’s a profoundly sad reality to exist in a world where Toby doesn’t. He brought life and joy to every room he entered, and our hearts are dimmer today without him. An American icon and a stalwart Sooner. A superstar talent and a fierce friend of our program. We thank him for the unwavering support he always gave, his generosity as a human being and the countless smiles and memories he created here in Oklahoma and around the world.

“All our love to Tricia, Shelley, Krystal, Stelen, and their families. We’ll miss you on campus, TK. We’re crying for us.”

Sooner Nation had so many experiences of Toby to share, and did so on Tuesday in hoping to provide some sort of comfort to those around them. The entire fan base stands still for a day of reflection as one of the faces of the Sooner State has now gone home.
