To say the Big 12 Basketball schedule is anything less than a gauntlet at this point in the season would be doing a disservice to college basketball fans everywhere.
While the league stands alone as the nation’s premier college basketball conference, some experts like ESPN’s Jay Williams believe that there is a lack of teams in the conference with a chance at claiming a national title.
With Jay Williams and the rest of ESPN’s College GameDay crew heading to Lawrence for Saturday’s matchup between Kansas and Baylor, Williams explained his thoughts about the possibility of a Big 12 team winning a National Championship in 2023-24 to some local reporters in the area saying, “I know the Big 12 has more ranked teams than any other conference. I don’t think there are a lot of national contenders in this conference. I think Kansas is truly the only national contender.”
While the Jayhawks lost a heartbreaker to their in-state rival Kansas State on Monday night, Bill Self’s squad has shown some impressive flashes against some of the nation’s top teams. Kansas currently trails Houston, Iowa State, and Baylor in Big 12 Conference standings but has a chance to earn a win over the Bears on Saturday night.
“I don’t know if I believe in Houston and their depth,” Williams told KUSports.com. “I don’t know if I believe in some other teams in the conference. But I think whenever you defend home court going against a team like Baylor considering the magnitude of ranked teams that we have, I think every game in this conference is massive.”
Williams finished off his thoughts by complimenting the Big 12 Conference alongside other panelists from the GameDay crew saying, “I think that’s the part that makes it great. It’s each and every single night. You know when you look across the landscape of college basketball, you have Purdue, you have some other teams that are there, UConn playing in the Big East. But I think top to bottom, you get the best matchups in this conference.”
While only time will tell which teams from the Big 12 Conference have the ability to compete for a championship, Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks will have the tough task of defending home court against Scott Drew and the Baylor Bears on Saturday, February 10th at 5:00 PM CT on ESPN.
