Chiefs CB L’Jarius Sneed: ‘We Wanted Brock to Throw the Ball’

NFL: NFC Divisional Round-Dallas Cowboys at San Francisco 49ers

While Brock Purdy has shown an ability to make big plays in clutch moments, Kansas City’s defense was daring him to throw the ball in Super Bowl 58.

Chiefs cornerback L’Jarius Sneed spoke about their defensive approach following the 25-22 win saying, “We knew they were going to run the ball, but we just wanted Brock to throw the ball.”

Purdy went on to have a solid game against Kansas City going 23 of 38 for 255 yards and one passing touchdown against one of the NFL’s top-ranked defense.

While some fans may view Sneed’s comments as a shot at Brock Purdy, his backlash reads as more of a compliment to 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey than anything. McCaffrey has been sensational this season and was a heavy player in the MVP race. The Colorado native finished his 2023-24 season off with 2,023 all purpose yards and 21 total touchdowns.

Mahomes and the Chiefs got the last laugh against San Francisco sneaking out a 25-22 win in overtime. With former Big 12 players like Brock Purdy, Patrick Mahomes, Jalen Hurts, Kyler Murray, and more under center for the foreseeable future, Super Bowl 58 does not feel like the last matchup fans will see between former Big 12 signal callers.
