Kansas G Kevin McCullar Active vs. Oklahoma
Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks will have one of their stars returning to action on Saturday with senior guard Kevin McCullar set to take the court against No. 25 Oklahoma.
According to a report from the Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman, McCullar will return after missing the previous two games due to a nagging knee injury.
The news of McCullar’s return is huge for Kansas as the Texas native has been one of the focal points of Bill Self’s team in 2023-24. The senior guard is currently averaging 19.5 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game in his fifth season of college basketball.
Coming out of high school, McCullar was listed as a three-star prospect by the 247Sports index and checked in as the nation’s 192nd-ranked prospect. He was also listed as the 42nd-ranked small forward in his class and the 19th-ranked player in the state of Texas.
Kansas head coach Bill Self was optimistic when discussing both McCullar and freshman guard Jamari McDowell to return to action during his Thursday press conference saying, “I’m anticipating that, hopefully, both will. Jamari shouldn’t be an issue at all. Depending on how Kevin feels through practice on Thursday and if he’s able to continue to go on Friday, I would anticipate him being able to be out there some. I don’t know the exact role or how much he’ll play.”
McCullar has recorded 15 or more points in 19 straight games for Kansas this season with his biggest game of the year coming against Yale on December 22nd where he recorded 34 points, six rebounds, four assists, two steals, and one block. Without McCullar, the Jayhawks have recorded a 1-1 record with a 64-61 win over Baylor and a 79-50 loss to Texas Tech.
With the Jayhawks finding themselves two games back in the hunt for a Big 12 title, McCullar’s return couldn’t have come at a better time. Saturday’s matchup between Oklahoma and Kansas tips off in Norman at 3:00 PM CT on ESPN.
