Avery Johnson Headlines 2024 College Football Rising Stars List
Sophomore quarterback Avery Johnson has earned some of the most hype at the quarterback position in Kansas State history.
Entering the 2024 season as the main guy under center for the Wildcats, Johnson has garnered praise from college football sports personalities worldwide, most recently 247Sports’ Brad Crawford.
Johnson was the first player mentioned on Crawford’s list of college football’s 2024 rising stars and earned comparisons to Wildcat legend Michael Bishop in the article.
“Big 12 football fans knew how special Avery Johnson could be throughout the 2023 season as the secondary option at quarterback for the Wildcats behind Will Howard,” Crawford said. “However, his true breakout performance nationally came during Kansas State’s bowl win over NC State when he threw for 178 yards and two scores while rushing for another 71 and a touchdown as “the guy” on offense. There hasn’t been a quarterback at the program who captured this level of hype since Michael Bishop, which could work out beautifully in a conference that no longer includes Texas or Oklahoma in front of the Wildcats.”
Johnson finished his freshman season without surrendering a single turnover while totaling impressive numbers through the air and on the ground. The Kansas native recorded 37 completions for 479 yards and five touchdowns while adding 52 carries for 296 yards and seven scores on the ground.
As the hype builds for Johnson at Kansas State, the college football season begins to creep closer. The Wildcats will kick off their 2024 season on Saturday, August 31st, against the UT Martin Skyhawks.
