Alabama Hires Baylor OL Coach Chris Kapilovic

NCAA Football: Sugar Bowl-Georgia vs Baylor

A veteran Big 12 position coach is leaving the conference to join the most prestigious football program in the country as Baylor offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic is expected to be hired for the same duties with the Alabama Crimson tide, according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel.

“Sources: Alabama is set to hire Baylor offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic,” Thamel wrote on Twitter. “He’s a veteran OL coach with time at Colorado, Michigan State and UNC.”

After being selected as the man to follow Nick Saban at Alabama, Kalen DeBoer has had the task of assembling a staff in Tuscaloosa that can help him maintain the mountain-top status that the Crimson Tide has grown accustomed to. One of his first hires after taking the job at Bama was to bring along his offensive line coach, Scott Huff, along with offensive coordinator, Ryan Grubb.

Huff was responsible for the Huskies’ Joe Moore Award-winning group in 2023, being recognized as the nation’s best offensive line unit. However, the pairing would not continue in Tuscaloosa, as Ryan Grubb was offered the offensive coordinator position with the Seattle Seahawks and Huff followed his to coach the Seahawks’ O-Line.

The loss of two of his top offensive staffers led DeBoer to look at external candidates for the job and Kapilovic was one of the stronger options out there at the position.

Kapilovic spent the last four seasons at Michigan State, serving as the offensive line coach and run-game coordinator while also adding an assistant head coach title back in 2021. He was hired as the Bears’ new O-Line coach in December 2023, but will now be headed to Tuscaloosa after just two months with the program.

Now, just two months after landing Eric Mateos’ replacement — who also left for an SEC job — Baylor is back on the search for an offensive line coach with spring football quickly approaching.
