LA Rams Hire Iowa State OC Nate Scheelhaase as Pass Game Specialist
Matt Campbell and the Iowa State Cyclones are officially in the market for a new offensive coordinator as the Los Angeles Rams hired Nate Scheelhaase as their newest pass game specialist.
Scheelhaase has been in various positions with the Cyclones since 2018 before taking over as the team’s offensive coordinator in 2023.
Scheelhaase, a seven-year coaching veteran in Ames, was a large part of the Cyclones offense turnaround in 2023. In 2022, Iowa State finished dead last under Tom Manning in total yards, rushing yards per game, and points per game. In Scheelhaase’s first year as the team’s OC, he helped the team flip the script regarding offensive production.
Iowa State finished off the season averaging the 12th-most total yards, 11th-most rushing yards, and the 10th-most points per game, and while the numbers still left a lot to be desired, the 2023 season was a massive step in the right direction.
Scheelhaase helped multiple members of Iowa State’s offense earn All-League honors with Rocco Becht, Jaylin Noel, and Stevo Klotz. Becht was named Big 12 Offensive Freshman of the Year and Second-Team Freshman All-American after passing more than 3,000 yards and 23 touchdowns. Noel recorded 66 grabs for 820 yards and seven touchdowns as a junior, while Stevo Klotz earned recognition as one of the league’s top fullbacks.
Iowa State will now search for a new offensive coordinator ahead of the 2024 season, and after finishing sixth in the Big 12 Conference with a 7-6 overall record (6-3 CONF), the loss of Scheelhaase comes at a tough time. The Cyclones kick the 2024 season off on Saturday, August 31, against North Dakota.
